A Tea Leaf Reading Skeptic's First Reading

Updated: Jan 19, 2021

A Newbie’s Journey

I love the metaphysical. I’ve explored all kinds of intuitive modalities. I’ve delved into tarot, oracle, and angel decks. One method I hadn’t explored was tea leaf reading. I couldn’t wrap my head around tea leaves telling me anything about myself. The reading surprised me.

A chance encounter in a Facebook group led me to this intriguing modality. I went into it with an open mind, which always helps when diving into something new.

My session started with a pleasant conversation with my reader, Cathy Skidmore, a Reiki Master and intuit. When she started practicing Reiki, it opened up her intuitive abilities. Tea leaf reading was a natural fit for her because she was already a tea seller. When someone suggested she do tea leaf readings, the idea struck a chord with her, and she’s been doing it ever since.

During my reading, she had me choose one teacup from a group of four. I chose one that had a subtle, delicate flower design. She poured the tea leaves into the cup and turned it over to spill the clump of tea out leaving an imprint on the cup.

From there, she showed me the tea leaf design, pointing out what stood out to her. Before she poured out the tea leaves and connected intuitively, she asked me to think of questions that I had. I didn’t tell her my questions before she started her interpretation of what she saw in the leaves.

She proceeded to show me the images she saw in the cup. Since, this was a Zoom reading, I looked at the images through a laptop screen. To my surprise, I saw clear images in the leaves.

One was a figure dancing, She showed it to me, and I saw an image that reminded me of The Grateful Dead dancing bear. Her interpretation resonated because it related the situation I am in at this moment, which I hadn’t given her real detail on.

Another was the number five, which I could see clearly in the leaves. I think I expected to see random particles and not much else so seeing a clear five made me pause in a good way.

One of the visuals that struck me most was a lizard Cathy showed me in the leaves. She showed me the interpretations from her sheet, and the images on the sheet and in the leaves were strikingly similar. The one meaning she focused on from the several on the sheet related to an experience I have been having recently and gave me some clarity.

At the end of the session, I recognized a similarity between tarot and tea leaf readings. Both rely on interpretation of visual images and the intuition of the reader. The difference is that tarot cards have pre-printed images and images from the tea leaves form in the moment.

I came away from this reading with tangible clarity and a respect for tea leaf reading. It truly is a legitimate modality.

If you’re open with your intuitive modalities, give this one a try.
